Indie rock is a genre of rock music whose name derives from its independent, do-it-yourself focus. Typically, indie musicians abstain from signing to major labels. However, in recent years various artists have released singles and albums to major labels. The Ting Tings, for example, released their album We Started Nothing to Columbia records. Indie popularized in the 2000s after Alternative became over-commercialized.
